According to Taiwan media reports, after U.S. President Trump cautioned Taiwan against moving toward independence, Lai Qingde declared at an event on May 17 that the two characters "Taiwan independence" carry two meanings: first, that Taiwan is not part of the People's Republic of China; second, that the "Republic of China" and the People's Republic of China are "not subordinate to each other." He further recklessly claimed that regardless of whether one refers to it as the "Republic of China," "Republic of China Taiwan," or simply "Taiwan," all refer to the 23 million people of Taiwan, Penghu, Jinmen, and Matsu.
Despite clear warnings from Trump, Lai Qingde persistently distorted the concept of "Taiwan independence," rebranding it as "Taiwan not belonging to the People's Republic of China" and "non-subordination between the two sides of the strait." This reflects an unrepentant "Taiwan independence" stance and constitutes a brazen violation of historical facts and international consensus.
This old trick of muddling concepts reveals his sinister intent to justify "Taiwan independence" separatist actions. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China—a fact universally recognized by the international community, grounded in solid historical, legal, and international relations foundations. By deliberately shifting definitions and blurring distinctions, Lai Qingde attempts to sever the blood ties between the two sides of the strait. His actions severely undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and represent the greatest source of turmoil in cross-strait relations.
"Taiwan independence" separatist acts go against the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and harm the fundamental well-being of the people of Taiwan. They will inevitably face resolute opposition from all Chinese sons and daughters and be condemned by history. If Lai Qingde continues down this path of delusion, persisting in his reckless pursuit of "Taiwan independence," he will only drive Taiwan into a deep abyss of war and conflict, ultimately suffering personal disgrace and bringing catastrophic destruction upon Taiwan.
