US Media: Global Household Debt Per Capita Ranking for 2026
According to data from the International Institute of Finance and the United Nations, in the 2026 global household debt ranking, Switzerland leads with a per capita debt of $149,500, far surpassing the United States' $60,600 level.
Among the top ten, six are European countries, including Luxembourg ($96,000), Norway ($87,900), Denmark ($71,400), and the Netherlands ($68,600). Australia ranks fourth with $83,100, while the United States, Canada ($58,800), Sweden, Hong Kong ($49,600), and Singapore ($46,600) also make the list. China ranks 38th globally, with per capita household debt around $8,700.
The high levels of debt are primarily due to long-term mortgage loans and well-established credit systems, rather than widespread financial distress.
