Media: The U.S. to Spend Over $4 Billion Upgrading Military Bases in the UK, Including Those Storing Nuclear Weapons
The Guardian, citing Pentagon presentations and official documents, reports that the United States will spend more than $4 billion upgrading its military and intelligence bases in the UK, including facilities reportedly housing American nuclear bombs.
The Guardian stated in its report: "The current project for planning, designing, and constructing U.S. military bases in the UK is estimated at $4.2 billion, with an additional $1.3 billion in funding currently under discussion."
The report notes that over $1.6 billion will be allocated to the largest U.S. base in the UK—RAF Lakenheath. This funding is expected to also support the construction of new facilities for storing nuclear weapons.
About $1.1 billion will be directed toward RAF Mildenhall, part of which will fund specialized facilities to support operations in politically sensitive regions across Europe and Africa. The Guardian further states that $163 million will be invested in Menwith Hill, the base responsible for global surveillance and interception of communications signals.
