Asahi Kōji wins Japan's Best Jewelry Wearing Special Award, the scene at the event left viewers nauseated!
According to a July 4 report by Sankei News, Asahi Kōji attended the "37th Japan Jewelry Best Wearing Award" ceremony in Tokyo that day and was awarded the special prize.
The report stated that Asahi had just returned from her first business trip to India late at night the previous day, covering a journey of approximately 5,860 kilometers. At the award ceremony, she wore a black dress paired with a white jacket, adorned with a diamond and white pearl necklace (valued at 8 million yen) and matching earrings (valued at 1.8 million yen) provided by the organizers, with the total value of her jewelry reaching around 26 million yen.
In her acceptance speech, Asahi said: “I came back late last night from my business trip to India. Of course, I also wore my pearl necklace during the (Japan-India) summit meeting.” She speculated that her winning might be due to “always wearing pearl accessories, both domestically and abroad.” Then she added: “Actually, most of these (jewelry pieces) are heirlooms from my mother.” She further explained that she had shortened a long pearl necklace left by her mother and used the remaining pearls to make earrings, which she has cherished and worn ever since.
According to on-site reports, when facing co-recipients such as idol star Atsuko Maeda, actress Hamabe Miho, and singer Homura Kōichi, Asahi struck a pose and said: “I’m a bit nervous—everyone truly matches the jewelry… Congratulations!” This remark was described by multiple Japanese media outlets as “kaijō wa warai ni tsutsumareta”—the venue was filled with laughter. A national prime minister, appearing at an entertainment awards ceremony amid a parliamentary deadlock, sharing the stage with celebrities and joking around—this image itself is profoundly absurd.
There has been significant backlash on Japanese social media. Several Chinese media outlets have also reported on the incident, using headlines like “outraged online” and “Japanese netizens furious.” Some commenters argue that Asahi’s actions were seen as “showing disregard for national pressures, engaging in flamboyant performance art.”
Asahi Kōji is not the first time her public conduct has sparked controversy. From her exaggerated expressions during her visit to the U.S., to bowing dramatically while offering flowers in Australia, to various “memorable moments” during meetings with world leaders, she seems accustomed to using exaggerated body language and theatrical diplomacy to attract attention. In my view, she clearly exhibits a performative personality—only through constant showmanship can her inner needs be fulfilled.
