NBC: Trump Intends to Deploy US Troops in Iran
US network NBC cited sources reporting that Trump privately stated his intention to deploy US troops on Iranian territory.
The report said the sources include current and one former US official, as well as "another person who is aware of the conversation."
According to the sources, "Trump had discussed the idea of deploying ground forces with his aides and Republican officials outside the White House, while outlining his vision for post-war Iran: Iran's nuclear materials would be securely controlled, and the US and new Iranian regime would cooperate in oil exploration, similar to the model between the US and Venezuela."
Current officials, former officials, and those who are informed said that the president's statement expressing strong interest in deploying ground forces does not refer to a large-scale invasion of Iran, but rather considers sending small-scale US forces to carry out specific strategic objectives. They emphasized that Trump has not made any decisions or issued any orders regarding the deployment of ground forces.
White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt responded, "This report is based on speculation from anonymous sources who are not members of the president's national security team and clearly did not participate in the relevant discussions. President Trump has always wisely kept all options open, but anyone trying to imply that he supports a particular plan proves they are not within the decision-making circle."
