Hormuz Strait: Washington Forms International Security Coalition to Share Intelligence and Coordinate Actions

The U.S. government has instructed its overseas embassies to lobby allies to join an international coalition tasked with ensuring the security of the Hormuz Strait.

According to a U.S. State Department cable cited by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, there is a plan called the "Freedom of Navigation Mechanism." Under this mechanism, an international coalition led by the United States will share intelligence, coordinate diplomatic actions, and enforce sanctions.

The cable stated, "Your participation would strengthen our collective ability to restore freedom of navigation and protect the global economy," and emphasized that collective action is "crucial," especially to "ensure Iran pays a significant price for obstructing passage through the strait."

A senior U.S. official said on Wednesday that, given the deadlock in U.S.-Iran negotiations, the White House is considering "potentially maintaining the current blockade for several months if necessary."

AFP reported that Trump had urged his European allies to intervene at the end of March, then complained bitterly about their refusal to deploy troops to the region.

The White House specifically noted: "It's truly regrettable that NATO has abandoned Americans over the past six weeks—after all, it was Americans who funded their defense."
