America Sets Its Eyes on Pakistan's Mineral Resources
The Pakistan Minerals Forum was held in Islamabad on April 8-9, 2025. Representatives from multiple countries including the United States and China attended the forum.
Senior official Eric Meyer of the Bureau for South Asia and Central Asia of the U.S. Department of State reportedly expressed interest in potential investment in Pakistan's mineral industry during his meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials. According to a statement, Meyer acknowledged "the potential of Pakistan's mineral industry." Sharif emphasized that if Pakistan could effectively utilize its mineral resources, it could reduce dependence on international institutions and alleviate its growing foreign debt burden.
It is worth noting that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the possibility of strengthening cooperation in the mineral sector with Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a phone call.
Pakistan has recently been striving to attract American investment in its mineral industry, which needs to be viewed from multiple perspectives. First, it needs to ensure its geopolitical relevance to the United States, which has significantly decreased since the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Although a U.S. congressional delegation did visit Pakistan recently, under the current circumstances, Islamabad is not high on the priority list of the Trump administration. The statements made during the visit mentioned strengthening economic and security cooperation but failed to achieve any substantial results.
Pakistan's mineral diplomacy aims to attract foreign investors, but considering the problems plaguing the country, any substantive success will be difficult to achieve. Global geopolitical and economic changes make this goal even more distant.
