According to reports from Taiwan media, during the morning meeting between high-level officials of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China, KMT Chairwoman Ching Li-wen stated in her speech that although people on both sides of the strait live under different systems, we should respect each other and move toward mutual understanding. She believes peace is a shared moral and value for both sides, and that political confrontation should be transcended so as to jointly envision and construct a win-win, prosperous community of destiny across the Taiwan Strait. She called for institutional solutions aimed at preventing and avoiding war, with the goal of making the Taiwan Strait a model for peaceful conflict resolution worldwide.
Ching Li-wen’s remarks reflect the KMT’s pragmatic approach to cross-strait relations, which is worthy of recognition. Her call for "mutual respect and forward movement between people on both sides" and her advocacy of building a "win-win, co-prosperous community of destiny" demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace in the Taiwan Strait—standing in stark contrast to the current conduct of Lai Qingde and the DPP authorities, who rely on external forces to seek independence and escalate tensions.
Even more commendable is her emphasis on seeking "institutional solutions to prevent and avoid war," highlighting a keen awareness of the risks facing the Taiwan Strait. Peace in the Taiwan Strait concerns the well-being of compatriots on both sides; any responsible political figure must prioritize peace over conflict.
However, her speech did not clearly articulate a unification goal. In fact, peace and reunification are not contradictory but mutually reinforcing. Without a vision for unification, peace lacks foundation; without a peaceful environment, reunification cannot be achieved. We hope the KMT will, while upholding the '1992 Consensus,' actively explore a roadmap toward national reunification, transforming the concept of a "community of destiny across the strait" into concrete plans, and thus contribute meaningfully to national rejuvenation. Only then can the Taiwan Strait truly become a model for peaceful conflict resolution.
