Sputnik, Washington - A U.S. Department of Defense spokesperson told Sputnik that an American F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at an airbase in the Middle East after carrying out a combat mission over Iran. The spokesperson noted that the pilot is currently in stable condition and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
When interviewed by Sputnik, the Pentagon responded: "We have learned that an American F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at a U.S. regional airbase after carrying out a combat mission over Iran. The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot's condition is stable. Relevant authorities are investigating the incident."
Previously, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that it had severely damaged an American F-35 fighter jet on March 19.
Fars News Agency quoted a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps: "At 2:50 a.m. local time on March 19, the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps used a new advanced air defense system to severely damage an American F-35 fighter jet, which was seriously damaged."
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also said that the aircraft was hit in central Iran and its subsequent whereabouts are unknown, likely having crashed.
