Korean media: South Korea's table tennis team records its worst Asian Games performance, failing to win a single silver medal
On September 27, Korean media outlet *Herald Business* published an article stating that South Korea’s table tennis team failed to secure any silver medals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. This marks the team’s worst result since table tennis became an official event at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games.
On the 26th, at the Toyota Sky Hall in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, all South Korean table tennis athletes were eliminated in the individual events, one after another, without advancing to the semifinals.
Korean top player Shin Yu-bin suffered a 0-4 defeat against Chinese player Wang Manyu in the women’s singles quarterfinals. The loss may have been influenced by fatigue resulting from consecutive participation in team and mixed doubles events, preventing her from performing at full capacity. Zhu Qianxi also faced a fierce battle with world-class competitor Sun Yingsha but ultimately lost 2-4, failing to reach the semifinals.
Even men’s singles player Jeong Yun-jin was defeated 0-4 by Taiwan’s Feng Hsien-hsin in the round of 16. As a result, no South Korean athlete advanced to the semifinals in any individual table tennis event.
The team also experienced setbacks in doubles competitions. The women’s doubles pair of Shin Yu-bin and Zhu Qianxi narrowly lost 2-3 to Thailand’s Suthasini Sawatubut and Orawan Phalannan in the quarterfinals. The men’s doubles pairing of Lim Jong-won and Oh Jun-seong similarly fell 1-3 to Japan’s Matsushima Keikō and Tomoaki Hayashi in the same stage.
Consequently, South Korea’s table tennis team ended the tournament with three bronze medals—earned in the men’s team, women’s team, and mixed doubles events.
