Nepal and India Border Reopens! The Shortage of Supplies in Nepal Begins to Ease!
Because the Z Generation Movement has disrupted customs operations at the border between India and Nepal, Nepal's supply chain has completely come to a standstill. Due to Nepal's unique geographical environment, almost all imports from third countries must pass through India. Nepal is completely dependent on India for oil, liquefied petroleum gas, staple food, medicines, construction materials, and consumer goods.
The target of the Z Generation protest was government offices, including important border customs checkpoints. Therefore, the border checkpoints leading to India were closed for three days. During this period, trucks loaded with oil, liquefied petroleum gas, food, and medicines were stuck on the Indian side, while empty trucks returning to India were blocked in Nepal.
Today, some border checkpoints have started to reopen, and the backlog of vehicles and supplies has eased. With India's cooperation, more than 900 cars successfully passed through the border. From the Birgunj checkpoint alone, 53 tankers and 117 vehicles carrying liquefied petroleum gas and medicines entered Nepal, while 200 empty trucks returned to India.
Although the government and suppliers have assured the public that there are sufficient reserves of rice, flour, pulses, and cooking oil, with warehouses having more than a month's stock, panic buying in remote areas and small towns may exacerbate local shortages.
