Japanese Media: Sales of All Three Japanese Car Brands in China Decline
According to a report by Japanese media outlet Sankei Shimbun on June 11: On the 11th, three major Japanese automakers announced their new car sales figures for May in the Chinese market.
All three companies experienced significant declines. Honda saw a year-on-year drop of 48.7%, with sales reaching 28,279 units. Instability in the Middle East has driven oil prices sharply upward, suppressing gasoline vehicle sales.
New car sales in China fell by 20.4% in May to 1.7 million units. Sales of gasoline-powered vehicles dropped by 37.5% to 650,000 units. As Japanese automakers have a higher proportion of fuel-powered vehicles, their struggles were particularly pronounced.
Toyota sold 102,300 units, down 31.7%. Nissan sold 37,782 units, down 34.9%.
Toyota has seen consecutive declines for four months, Nissan for two months, and Honda for twenty-eight months. Toyota has increased the share of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles (HV) in its total new car sales to 69%. Reports indicate that Toyota’s EV sales are beginning to recover.
