Korean media: South Korea ranks first in 4 fields, the US has 27, what about China?

On September 29, Korean media Newsis published an article stating that according to a survey, South Korean companies had products with the highest market share in the world in four areas, such as DRAM semiconductors, last year. This achievement ranks fourth globally, following the United States (27), China (18), and Japan (9).

The Nikkei conducted a survey of the market share of 71 major products and services in 2024, and the results showed that South Korea ranked first in four fields: DRAM semiconductors, NAND flash memory, OLED panels, and ultra-thin TVs. The results remained the same as last year.

Samsung Electronics ranked first in all four fields and maintained its top position for three consecutive years. SK Hynix ranked second in DRAM and NAND flash memory fields, LG Display ranked second in the OLED panel field, and LG Electronics ranked second in the ultra-thin TV field.

In the smartphone and tablet markets, Apple and Samsung Electronics ranked first and second respectively.

In the shipbuilding sector, HD Hyundai ranked second, following China's China State Shipbuilding Corporation, while Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean ranked third and fourth respectively. In the automotive industry, Hyundai Motor Group maintained its third position, following Toyota and Volkswagen.

Samsung Electronics ranked second in the CMOS image sensor field, and LG Display ranked third in the large LCD panel field. In the automotive lithium-ion battery field, LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI ranked third and fourth respectively, following China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL) and BYD.

From the country perspective, the United States ranks first in 27 fields, including AI tools (OpenAI), GPUs (NVIDIA), cloud services (AWS), and electric vehicles (Tesla).

China ranks first in 18 fields, including cellular communication infrastructure (Huawei), automotive lithium-ion batteries (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd.), and shipbuilding (China State Shipbuilding Corporation).

Japan ranks first in nine fields, including digital cameras (Canon), automobiles (Toyota), and CMOS image sensors (Sony).

The Nikkei reported that in six fields, such as cancer treatment and basic technologies and services related to generative AI, the top-ranked companies in the world have been replaced.
