Reference Message Network reported on May 14 that according to a report from the Russia LifeNet on May 13, Russian President Putin pointed out on May 13 when meeting with members of the All-Russian Social Organization "Delovaya Rossiya" that Western brands that have suspended their business in Russia cannot return to the Russian market by just apologizing. He said that many foreign large enterprises have expressed a willingness to return to the Russian market and have made such requests to him.

Putin said: "I would like to emphasize that Alexei (the chairman of 'Business Russia') just said: 'Some companies transferred money to the Ukrainian army, they should apologize.' No! This is absolutely not enough!"

Putin pointed out that all problems should be considered from a pragmatic perspective, but he also ruled out the possibility of some brands returning to the Russian market. He said that Russia can only allow foreign enterprises that bring benefits to the country to enter the market, while closing the door to those that are not beneficial to Russia.

Putin said: "If the entry of a certain company is beneficial to us, then it should be allowed to come in."

He added that if a foreign enterprise is not beneficial or unnecessary for Russia, Moscow will find thousands of reasons to refuse its return to the Russian market, "and 999 of these reasons will fully comply with the rules of the World Trade Organization. As for the remaining one reason, we may have to sue in court for at least 15 years."

Previously, reports said that several foreign companies have begun consulting lawyers to explore the possibility of returning to the Russian market. These mainly include raw material traders, insurers, and shipping companies. However, even if the restrictive measures are lifted, there still exist significant risks because relevant sanctions could be reinstated at any time. (Compiled/ Zhao Zhipeng)
