Reference News Network, September 4 report: The Russian "Viewpoint" website published an article written by Timofey Bordaev, project director of the Valdai International Dialogue Club, titled "The World Order Has Changed for the First Time in a Peaceful Way." The following is a compilation of the article:
This week, the center of world politics has shifted to friendly China. A series of grand meetings and events held there clearly indicate that the West's ability to control the world has been significantly weakened.
26 foreign heads of state and government leaders attended the commemorative meeting marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. What brought them together was the key to the future of world politics - the desire to make independent decisions.
It is no coincidence that the United States and most European countries, not to mention Japan, ignored the commemorative meeting held in Beijing - their views on the most important event of the last century differ greatly from ours.
When we talk about the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BRICS, or other multilateral mechanisms, we should know that they were born in a world that once believed there was no alternative to the United States. The reason for believing "there was no alternative" was because the West controlled everything in world politics.
The documents of the SCO emphasize the respect for sovereignty, which does not exist in the West. This means that SCO member states acknowledge that governments are primarily responsible for the security and well-being of their people.
At the same time, we should not ignore that the good intentions expressed in the Tianjin Summit declaration of the SCO differ from the Western view of the world order. Now, the international community has an option outside of the one provided by the United States and its European partners. I would like to emphasize again that the main significance of the current goals set by the SCO lies not only in the novelty of the tasks but also in the existence of a worldview different from the Western one, which has been recognized by an important group of major powers.
Another perspective noted by observers at the summit is that it is a platform for bilateral talks for an expanding group of participants, including both SCO member states and countries with close relations with them.
The SCO summit and the commemorative meeting held this week in China will not immediately change the international political world around us. But this is not necessary. The grand event itself, through its scale and the ability of its members to work together, demonstrates the great changes taking place. We may not see all the results overnight, but we will continue to feel the positive impact. (Translated by Wei Lianglei)
