U.S. Commander in Japan Expresses Sympathy, Not Apology, to Okinawa Victim's Family
According to local Okinawa media reports: Following the arrest of a U.S. Marine Corps soldier stationed in Okinawa on suspicion of robbery and murder, Governor Gen Takanori Kusaki lodged a formal protest on the afternoon of the fifth. General Benjamin Watson, the highest-ranking U.S. official in Okinawa, stated: “I am deeply saddened by this incident. I recognize that this serious event has caused significant distress to our Okinawan neighbors.” While extending condolences to the family of the victim, he did not issue an apology.
General Watson emphasized: “We consistently demand the highest standards of conduct from all military personnel, regardless of whether they are on duty.”
He added: “We remain committed to acting with discipline and accountability, in order to uphold the trust of the local community.”
