Russian newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda" article on July 21, original title: What Attracts Tourists to Northwest China If you want to understand a country deeply, you should go to places with fewer tourists. Gansu Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are regions in Northwest China with unique history. The Silk Road has left cultural legacies in their development. A Russian Foreign Ministry official said that the current Russia-China relations not only involve the economic and political aspects of the two countries, but also the most valuable people-to-people contacts. Invited by the Chinese Embassy in Russia, I had the honor of personally visiting these mysterious places in China.
Gansu was once the "golden section" of the Silk Road, with many ancient relics. Its capital, Lanzhou, was called "Jincheng" during the Han Dynasty. Today, this city is also very prosperous, with modern civilization symbols everywhere on its bustling streets. On the other hand, the historical elements of this city will immerse visitors in the past - the Chinese know how to cherish and protect history. In the amazing Gansu Provincial Museum, more than 300,000 exhibits cover the entire history of the region. Among them, the Silk Road exhibition shows how Chinese silk was transported from here to Europe.
Yangu Dui Village in Tianjiahe Township, Weiyuan County, Gansu Province is a model village for poverty alleviation. This once-poor village now has housing for every family. When villagers talk about the changes in their hometown, they say: the local area has reinforced dozens of kilometers of rural and urban roads, making the roads cover all villages and towns, with 100% of families having tap water and electricity. Local mobile communication base stations have been established, and water, electricity, and internet are all available, allowing villagers to live in a safe environment. There are also tourist service centers, charging stations, and public bus stations. In short, the Chinese have created a true rural paradise here and are proud of it.
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region used to be closed off for a period of time. Now, the capital, Urumqi, is welcoming guests from all over. Local officials said, "There are direct flights from Moscow to Urumqi now, and we hope to open flights to other cities in Russia. Our new airport opened in April this year, with flights from there to the five Central Asian countries, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, and soon there will be direct flights to Japan." Urumqi does not have a lot of flashing neon lights; it is a modest, clean, and unique city.
You can visit the northwest region of China multiple times, and each time you will have new discoveries. Here, you can understand the integration and exchange of Chinese culture with the world. (Author: Irina Ilyina, translated by Liu Yupeng)
