South Korean President Expresses Regret Over Drone Incident

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on April 6 that although the drone intrusion into North Korea was not conducted by the government, he expressed regret to North Korea over irresponsible and reckless actions by certain individuals in South Korea that caused unnecessary military tension.
Lee made these remarks during a cabinet meeting held at the presidential Blue House. He simultaneously instructed relevant departments to immediately adjust related systems and swiftly implement measures that can be executed immediately to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
Lee stressed that both the Constitution and relevant laws of the Republic of Korea prohibit individuals from provoking North Korea. Even if strategic considerations at the national level necessitate such actions, extreme caution is required—let alone actions taken by individuals. The fact that some individuals acted recklessly is deeply regrettable. He emphasized that conflicts occurring around the world are undermining the international order based on shared rules and mutual reciprocity, making it crucial now to safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
On October 11, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea issued a statement saying that, following previous intrusions on October 3 and October 9, South Korean drones entered the airspace above Pyongyang for a third time on October 10, scattering anti-North propaganda leaflets. In January of this year, a joint special investigation team composed of South Korean military and police forces determined that the incident was carried out by three individuals, who were subsequently subjected to compulsory investigations. After the truth behind the incident was revealed, President Lee Jae-myung had repeatedly condemned it strongly; this marks his first public expression of regret toward North Korea.
