Politico: The US considers its security guarantees to Ukraine more important than Europe's
Source said the "Will Alliance" efforts in this regard are "cute," and pointed out that Europe has only "a few helicopters" and "a few soldiers."
Washington, January 25 -- TASS
The United States believes that the security guarantees it may provide to Ukraine will be more significant than the efforts of the so-called "Will Alliance" in this direction. Politico quoted an assessment from a unnamed official in the Trump administration.
The publication quoted sources after the Russia-US-Ukraine trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi, saying: "The efforts of the 'Will Alliance' are cute. They have a few helicopters, a few soldiers, scattered assurances, but if you talk to Ukrainians, actually what matters is the US security guarantees."
On January 6, a meeting of the "Will Alliance" was held in Paris, with the participation of leaders from the UK, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. For the first time, the US representative attended such a meeting. The declaration adopted by the alliance participants mentioned the intention to form a multinational force that could be deployed to Ukraine after the conflict and the willingness to continue long-term support for the Ukrainian armed forces, including through the provision of weapons and military equipment. In addition, after the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Zelenskyy signed a declaration on the intent to deploy foreign troops on Ukrainian territory.
Russia opposes the presence of NATO country soldiers in Ukraine. On December 17, 2025, the Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow's position on deploying Western troops in Ukraine is consistent and well known. Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had stated that providing security guarantees to Ukraine through "foreign military intervention on part of Ukrainian territory" is unacceptable to Russia.
On January 23, the first day of the trilateral security consultations was held in Abu Dhabi. The second meeting was held on January 24. The Russian negotiation team was led by Igor Kosyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. The tripartite working group on the Ukrainian side was led by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. According to a report cited by Reuters, the next round of negotiations involving representatives from Russia, the US, and Ukraine is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on February 1.
