Russia criticizes Japan's "re-militarization" at the UN Security Council
China is the rotating president of the UN Security Council this month. On May 26, Foreign Minister Wang Yi chaired a high-level meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, themed around "Strengthening the international system centered on the United Nations." Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzha, criticized Japan's advancement of "re-militarization," stating it undermines the international system centered on the United Nations.
Nebenzha cited the enemy states clause in the UN Charter, accusing Japan of "expanding its military capabilities and openly discussing constitutional revision," and stated that "defeated powers of WWII are seeking excuses to rewrite the outcomes of war." He also specifically criticized Germany.
Nebenzha further accused the United States of refusing to issue a visa for Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Alimov, asserting that this action violates the U.S. obligations under the UN Headquarters Agreement, which requires rapid visa issuance for representatives attending UN meetings. According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif also missed the meeting due to visa issues.
