Zelensky: Ready to Amend the Election Law to Hold Elections
Sputnik Moscow, December 10 - After Trump made a statement that Ukraine needs to hold presidential elections, Zelensky said he was ready to amend the legal provisions previously cited as his reason for not seeking re-election, in order to hold elections.
Earlier, Trump stated that it is time for Ukraine to hold presidential elections and that the Ukrainian people should have the right to vote.
The "We- Ukraine" TV station reported Zelensky's words, saying: "I now hope the United States will help me, along with European partners, to ensure the security of the election. Ukraine will be ready for the election within the next 60-90 days. I request Ukrainian legislators to draft a bill on amending the legal framework and the Election Law in Times of Martial Law."
Zelensky has repeatedly stated that Ukrainian law does not allow holding elections during a state of war. The state of war entered by Ukraine in February 2022 is extended every three months. Zelensky's presidential term ends on May 20, 2024. The 2024 Ukrainian presidential election was canceled, citing the state of war and full mobilization.
