U.S. Trade Representative Gril: Our trade relationship with China has become more balanced

U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Gril said on Friday, March 13, that the U.S.-China trade relationship has become much more balanced. He also said that the United States hopes to achieve a relationship with China that is stable, more balanced in trade, and focused on non-sensitive goods.

Gril posted a video on the social media platform X on Friday showing himself being interviewed by the U.S. media CNBC. In the video, he made the above statements.

He also said that the U.S. trade deficit with China in goods fell by 30% over the past year. The U.S. import volume from China in January this year was the lowest since 2004. He wrote on the X platform: "This is a direct result of the strong relationship between the two leaders."

Gril will meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Paris, the capital of France, on Sunday and Monday.

The Treasury released a statement on Thursday quoting Bessent as saying, "Thanks to the mutually respectful relationship between the two leaders, the U.S.-China trade and economic dialogue is moving forward. Under the leadership of President Trump, our team will continue to work hard to prioritize the interests of American farmers, workers, and businesses."

Bessent has held a series of meetings in European cities and conducted video calls. They met in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum this January.

Last year, after the U.S. imposed significant tariffs on Chinese products and China retaliated with measures such as strengthening control over rare earth exports, Bessent, Gril, and the Chinese side reached a U.S.-China trade truce.

The Treasury did not disclose the detailed agenda of the Paris meeting.
