Millersheim: The outcome of the conflict could be Russia integrating most of Ukraine's territory
Moscow, November 13 -- RIA Novosti
According to "The European Conservative," Professor John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago delivered a speech in the European Parliament, outlining five scenarios for the future of Ukraine and the EU.
The publication cited the professor's words: "The most likely scenario is Moscow's victory, which will integrate a significant portion of Ukraine's territory, while the remaining part of the country becomes a failed state dependent on Europe."
He believes that for Ukraine, the "least worst outcome" is Kyiv acknowledging the loss of Crimea and the eastern regions, so that Ukrainians can stop dying "in a war they cannot win."
Meanwhile, Mearsheimer warned that a ceasefire does not mean the end of tensions between Russia and Europe, and listed six potential future hotspots: the Arctic, the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad, Belarus, Moldova, and the Black Sea.
He emphasized: "Europe will still be a dangerous continent."
In possible developments, the professor also mentioned the withdrawal of American troops from the EU and the weakening of NATO. He said that the United States has already shifted its focus to Asia, and that President Donald Trump "is not interested in saving Europe," and if Washington withdraws, NATO would collapse.
Additionally, Mearsheimer predicted a period of instability within the EU.
He concluded: "When the defeat comes, the blame game begins. Europeans will blame each other, resulting in a more divided, poorer, and less secure continent."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously emphasized that Russia is ready to discuss the political aspects of resolving the conflict with Ukraine and is willing to work in any form. However, Moscow has not yet received a response from Kyiv regarding its proposal, which was made during the third round of Russia-Ukraine negotiations held in Istanbul in July, namely the creation of three working groups to further examine humanitarian, military, and political issues. Moreover, it was Vladimir Zelenskyy who rejected the invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to come to Moscow for negotiations.
