Korean media: Half of the top 100 AI experts in the world are Chinese!
On August 7, the Korean newspaper "The Korea Daily" published an article stating that according to the information, half of the top 100 AI talents globally are Chinese. If those working abroad are also counted, the number exceeds half.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Office for Investment Promotion in China analyzed that "Among the top 100 AI experts globally, 50 are Chinese, and they are affiliated with Chinese research institutions or companies." The same survey showed that 20 AI experts from the United States entered the top 100, and half of them are Chinese or of Chinese descent.
This analysis is based on approximately 96,000 academic papers published by about 200,000 researchers between 2015 and 2024, as well as speeches at major international conferences, conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the number of papers and citations. The survey also included MIT Associate Professor He Kai-ming, a pioneer in computer vision. His research on the standard deep neural network AI model "ResNet" was selected by the academic journal "Nature" as one of the most cited papers of the 21st century.
The total number of AI researchers in China is also growing rapidly. In 2015, the number of AI researchers in China was less than 10,000, but by last year it had quickly increased to 52,000. The annual growth rate of the talent pool reached 28.7%. Of course, the United States still ranks first with about 63,000 AI researchers, but China is rapidly catching up.
In recent years, China's AI field has made rapid development in both quantity and quality. According to data from the AI research ranking website AI Rankings, since 2022, Peking University has ranked first in AI research output. Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University of China are also ranked second and third, respectively, with half of the top ten universities being Chinese institutions.
