Guard killed: Chinese workers kidnapped in southern Nigeria

A Nigerian security agency spokesperson announced on Saturday that armed militants killed 8 security personnel in southern Nigeria and kidnapped Chinese workers.

The incident occurred on Friday, when a group of armed assailants, suspected to be kidnappers, attacked a convoy belonging to the Nigerian paramilitary security force "Nigeria Civil Defence Corps" which was escorting Chinese citizens working at a local cement company "BUA".

The corps' spokesman, Afribi Babawale, stated that 4 of the kidnapped Chinese workers have been rescued, but one person is still missing. He added that the incident resulted in the death of 8 corps members and 4 others were seriously injured.

Armed attacks in Nigeria are increasing, especially in the northern region, while in the southern part of the country, kidnapping gangs are active, mainly for the purpose of demanding ransom for civilians.
