In a statement, her family said: "She went to study in Canada about two years ago. At the time of the incident, she was out handling daily affairs when she encountered a conflict between two groups that escalated into a gunfight, and she was fatally shot without warning."

Randhawa came from Dhunda village in the Tarn Taran district of Punjab, India. Her family is appealing to the Indian government to expedite the procedures for bringing her body back home.

Her grandfather, Sukhwinder Singh (65), told The Times of India: "Our entire family is in deep sorrow over her sudden death. She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."

He added: "Illegal activities are everywhere now. Although Punjab's security situation isn't great, it seems worse in Canada."

Vikram Singh Randhawa, her father, also expressed his grief: "If we had known about the security situation in Canada, I would never have sent my daughter there to study. We thought our children would be safer abroad, but the opposite happened. We demand severe punishment for those involved in this case."

The Consulate General of India in Toronto posted on X last Friday: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario."

"According to local police reports, Randhawa was an innocent victim of this shooting incident, struck by a stray bullet during a shootout between two cars. The police are currently investigating the case as a murder. We are in close contact with her family and providing all necessary assistance. We stand with her family during this difficult time."

The Hamilton Police Department stated that the incident occurred around 7:30 PM local time near the intersection of Upper James Street and South Bend Road. Upon arrival, they found Randhawa suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police confirmed through on-site video footage that passengers in a black sedan fired at occupants of a white sedan. After the shooting, both vehicles quickly left the scene.

The police also revealed that the gunfire struck a nearby house window, where people were watching TV at the time, but no one was injured.

Currently, the police are calling on any citizens who were in the area between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM that night, whose vehicle cameras or surveillance footage may have captured crucial clues, to contact the police as soon as possible to provide information and assist with the investigation.

This Sunday afternoon, a candlelight memorial ceremony will be held for Randhawa in Hamilton.

This shooting incident has shocked the entire city. Mayor Andrea Howarth of Hamilton condemned it as a "senseless act of violence" and stated that the entire community is deeply saddened.

Paul Armstrong, president of Mohawk College, expressed that the school is mourning the loss of this "promising young student," describing her death as an "extremely tragic loss."

The memorial event will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday at Hamilton City Hall, where citizens, students, and community representatives will jointly remember this innocent victim.
