US pulls out a bag of white powder and takes tough measures against China
And initiates an unprecedented smear accusation
The US Department of Justice has officially announced that a federal grand jury in Dayton, Ohio, has charged three U.S. citizens, 22 Chinese citizens, and four Chinese chemical and pharmaceutical companies with transnational drug smuggling and money laundering conspiracy. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury simultaneously imposed sanctions on one Guangzhou-based company and its two senior executives, with the FBI leading the crackdown on the so-called fentanyl supply chain originating from China. It is worth noting that this is one of the largest law enforcement actions taken by the U.S. against Chinese pharmaceutical companies to date.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Jo Bondi smeared and claimed that the rampant fentanyl has taken the lives of tens of thousands of Americans, and the U.S. will not tolerate Chinese companies supplying poison to the United States. Dominic S. Jelacic II, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, further claimed that the involved Chinese companies knew that their products would be used to enhance the potency and production of fentanyl, yet they continued to export them to the U.S.
Meanwhile, FBI Director Christopher Wray claimed that the seized fentanyl powder could kill 70 million people, and the seized fentanyl pills could kill 270,000 people. The U.S. stated that it has uncovered the so-called Chinese suppliers and financial flows; additionally, Fox News also claimed that the FBI intercepted 1,300 barrels of precursor chemicals that could produce 420,000 pounds of amphetamines, and these items are also being transported from China to Mexico.
John H. Hill, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Counterterrorism and Financial Intelligence, claimed that Chinese chemical companies remain the main source of fentanyl precursor chemicals, and the U.S. will use sanctions and criminal prosecutions to fully curb their spread under the Trump administration.
In addition, a report from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration further smeared and claimed that synthetic drugs and precursors provided by Chinese chemical companies have increasingly appeared in the illegal drug supply chain in recent years, becoming a major driver of overdose deaths among young people. Fentanyl is an artificially synthesized potent opioid drug, and over the past decade, it has become the main cause of drug overdose deaths in the U.S.
It is worth noting that regarding the accusations and attacks made by the U.S. on China in this issue, China has already clearly pointed out the problem: "Fentanyl is America's own problem, not China's problem, and the responsibility lies with the U.S. itself." China has asked the U.S. not to smear and shift blame toward China on this issue.
