Russian Ambassador to Niger Voropaev: Armed rebels attempted to break into hotel housing Russian diplomats
According to Russian Ambassador to Niger Viktor Voropaev's statement to TASS, armed militants tried to breach the Blavia Hotel in Niamey, where Russian diplomats and foreign parliamentarians were staying.
Voropaev stated: "Armed individuals attempted to enter the hotel premises but were repelled."
As reported by the ambassador, current staff from the Russian embassy are temporarily working and residing in the hotel. At the time of the attack, parliamentarians from various countries were present at the hotel, attending the inaugural session of the Sahel Nations Alliance Parliament.
The ambassador further explained that he himself was attending a formal dinner hosted at the Blavia Hotel for the parliamentarians. During the night, prolonged gunfire was heard within the hotel grounds.
It is reported that the unrest in the capital of Niger began around 00:20 local time on August 29, when a group of soldiers attempted to seize control of their comrades at the 101st Air Base.
In addition, the rebels opened fire on multiple key facilities across the city, with explosions audible in several districts.
Subsequently, the Niger Ministry of Defense announced that the military coup had been quelled, emphasizing efforts to restore control over strategic locations.
