Indian media: India targets the business opportunity of rapeseed meal export to China
Reference Message Network reported on April 21 that according to a report from The Times of India website on April 21, the tariff friction between China and Canada has brought India a business opportunity of 1 billion Indian rupees (100 Indian rupees are approximately equivalent to 8.55 Chinese yuan - our website note) to export rapeseed meal to Beijing. In recent weeks, India has begun to accelerate its exports of this product to China.
The Indian edible oil industry has called for starting negotiations with China to ease some of the stringent conditions imposed on Indian rapeseed meal about 10 years ago. An increase in exports is likely to support the currently suppressed local mustard seed prices. China has imposed a 100% tariff on Canadian rapeseed meal and rapeseed oil as retaliation for its own increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
In a letter to the Ministry of Commerce, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India said: "An opportunity has arisen to export Indian rapeseed meal to China. There is an excess of Indian rapeseed meal, which could potentially add an extra 500,000 tons, worth approximately 1 billion Indian rupees."
India had exported large amounts of rapeseed meal to China until 2011. Exports were suspended due to contamination by malachite green (detected in Indian rapeseed meal). Later, China again allowed imports of Indian rapeseed meal, but under strict conditions.
BV Mehta, Executive Director of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India, said: "Only five companies have been able to meet these stringent conditions, and currently only two of these companies are actually exporting rapeseed meal to China."
China is a major consumer of rapeseed meal and imports large quantities of it from Canada. The retaliatory 100% tariff imposed by China on Canadian rapeseed meal has led to a global increase in rapeseed meal prices.
In the letter, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India stated: "Given the current supply constraints and price increases, India now has the opportunity to explore and regain lost market share in China."
Currently, the price of Indian rapeseed meal is 35% lower than that on the international market. (Translated by Qiu Fang)
