Korean Media: Chinese AI Model Achieves Massive Success in South Korea, Revenue Surges 13-Fold!

On October 8, the Korean newspaper *Korea Economic Daily* published an article stating that the Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot is positioning South Korea as a key growth market for its global expansion. This shift follows the launch of its latest AI model, Kimi K3, which has driven rapid sales growth in the South Korean market.

Since the introduction of Kimi K3, the company’s revenue in South Korea has increased by approximately 13 times.

Industry analysts attribute this surge primarily to the model’s high cost-effectiveness. Its performance now approaches that of leading U.S. models, while maintaining significantly lower operational costs.

Kimi K3 is an open-weight model supporting up to 2.8 trillion parameters and a context length of approximately one million tokens. Independent evaluations indicate strong performance in coding, reasoning, and agent-based tasks. Further assessments confirm that Kimi K3 has narrowed the gap with top-tier closed-source models, achieving competitive results at a substantially lower cost.

Analysis suggests that in markets such as South Korea—where developers and enterprises widely adopt generative AI applications—the openness of Kimi K3, allowing customization based on specific service needs, provides a distinct competitive advantage. Notably, growing demand among businesses and developers to achieve high performance while reducing reliance on U.S.-based AI models has accelerated Kimi K3’s adoption.

Major American technology firms and specialized AI companies are also beginning to integrate Kimi K3. Microsoft is actively working to incorporate Kimi K3 into its Azure cloud platform.

Harvey, a U.S.-based legal AI firm backed by OpenAI’s startup fund, has selected Kimi K3 as the foundation for its proprietary model. Bloomberg notes this reflects a broader structural shift within the legal AI sector, aimed at decreasing dependency on closed models such as those from OpenAI and Anthropic.

A source familiar with the matter stated: “Kimi K3 has reduced token costs by about 70% while delivering results comparable to top-tier U.S. models.”
