US media: Under China's strict control of rare earths, the US may not be able to buy chips

After China strengthened its export controls on rare earths, Western media have finally come to their senses in recent days.

On the 10th, The New York Times analyzed that due to China's export control policies on rare earth items, the US may not be able to purchase advanced chips or related products, as these products contain Chinese rare earth components. For example, a capacitor produced by NVIDIA requires ultra-pure dysprosium, which is extremely difficult to purify. Global ultra-pure dysprosium all comes from a refining plant in Wuxi.

In addition to NVIDIA, semiconductor companies in Japan and South Korea also need to import large amounts of rare earth items from China to produce chips and other components. China's new regulations stipulate that any product containing 0.1% of Chinese rare earth components needs to apply for a license before export - which, as The New York Times put it, is equivalent to China controlling the global artificial intelligence and modern electronics supply chain.
