Most Latin American countries choose to cooperate with China despite US threats.
Viktor Khefetz, professor at St. Petersburg State University and editor-in-chief of the "Latin America" magazine, pointed out in an interview with the Sputnik News Agency: "There is no doubt that many countries are showing independence and attaching importance to cooperation with China. Brazil, Colombia, and Chile are clearly ready to cooperate with China."
Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who is also the rotating chairman of CELAC, stated at the beginning of his visit to China that Colombia plans to participate in the Belt and Road Initiative. Historically, Colombia has been one of the United States' closest allies in the region and one of the few South American countries whose trade with the US still exceeds its trade with China.
Even before Colombian President Gustavo Petro's visit to China, Washington had threatened Colombia over its plans to join Chinese projects. However, Colombia believes that national interests based on cooperation with China outweigh concerns about the political and economic reactions from the US regarding Colombia's pragmatic relations with China.
