China's First Phase Project: Ethiopia Begins Construction of Africa's Largest Airport
Sputnik News, Pretoria, January 10 - The construction of the Bishoftu International Airport in Ethiopia was officially launched on January 10, and this airport will become the largest airport in Africa.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia said at the launch ceremony: "In order to support the rapid development of Ethiopian Airlines and expand its global network, Ethiopian Airlines is building a new super hub. The Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) will become the largest aviation infrastructure project in African history."
Currently, Ethiopia's main airport is the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, with an annual passenger throughput of nearly 25 million.
The new airport will be designed to handle 60 million passengers in the first phase, and reach 110 million passengers when the project is completed. It is expected to be completed by 2030.
According to the introduction, the total value of the project is about 10 billion US dollars, and the construction site will be located 40 kilometers southeast of the capital. Abiy Ahmed Ali said that this area at an altitude of 1,910 meters provides favorable conditions for domestic and international flights. To connect the capital, multi-lane highways and high-speed rail lines are also planned.
