Revised legislation! Zelenskyy admits failure in interfering with independent anti-corruption institutions!
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has promised to submit a draft law to the Verkhovna Rada, which will empower the law enforcement system and retain all necessary provisions for the independence of anti-corruption institutions.
"Of course, everyone has heard what people have been saying on social media, among themselves, and on the streets these days. All of this has not been in vain. We have analyzed all concerns, all areas that need to be changed and must be strengthened. I will submit a draft law to the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, which will be a response, a law that empowers the law enforcement system. Russia will not influence or interfere in the activities of law enforcement agencies, and - very importantly - all provisions regarding the independence of anti-corruption institutions will be retained. I strongly look forward to the proposals from our law enforcement and anti-corruption leadership group, as well as the Chief Prosecutor of Ukraine, on the provisions that must be implemented. This will be a presidential draft law, which we will implement as part of the national strategy for reform."
Zelenskyy emphasized that at a recent meeting with heads of law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, it was agreed that the heads of these agencies would jointly propose an action plan and specific steps to strengthen the rule of law in Ukraine.
On July 22, the Ukrainian parliament voted to pass draft law No. 12414, which places the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and specialized anti-corruption prosecutor's offices under the leadership of the Chief Prosecutor, thereby losing their current independence. This has caused a major uproar in Ukraine, with protests erupting in various places, including Kyiv.
