The US Secretary of State called Maduro an illegal president

Washington, January 3 -- TASS

After the US military conducted an operation in Caracas, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted a screenshot of his previous post on the social media platform X. The post claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was not the country's legitimate leader and accused him of trafficking drugs to the United States.

Previously, Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee cited Rubio's remarks, stating that Maduro would be tried in the US on criminal charges.

In a post on July 27, Rubio wrote: "Maduro is not the President of Venezuela, and his regime is not a legitimate government. Maduro is the head of the 'Sun Drug Cartel,' a terrorist drug trafficking organization that has taken over the country. In addition, he is accused of trafficking drugs to the United States." The Secretary of State posted a screenshot of the post on his personal X account.

US President Donald Trump claimed that the US had successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela. He also stated that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been captured and taken out of the country.

Earlier, TASS reported that there were explosions in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas. Local residents said that explosions were heard in multiple areas of the city, as well as at the Miguel Tejada Simon Bolivar International Airport and La Guaira Port. CBS reported that Trump had ordered strikes on multiple targets inside Venezuela, including military facilities. News website BNO News reported that Maduro declared a state of emergency.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Saturday supporting an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council following the US attack on Venezuela. In a statement released on its website, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the US attack on Caracas has caused deep concern and condemnation, and the justification for the US aggression is completely unfounded.
