South Korean Prime Minister Kim Myung-sik said on Sunday that South Korea would employ all available measures, including emergency arbitration, to prevent a strike by workers at the country's largest employer, Samsung Electronics, and to minimize losses should a strike occur. He also stated that a one-day shutdown of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor plants could result in direct losses of up to 1 trillion KRW (approximately $667.68 million). Even more concerning is that temporary interruptions in semiconductor production lines could lead to months of recovery time; if raw materials have to be scrapped due to strikes, economic losses could rise to as much as 100 trillion KRW. Samsung Electronics will resume salary negotiations with its South Korean union on Monday, under the mediation of government arbitrators—an effort that may ease market concerns about potentially disruptive worker strikes.
