New Jersey Governor Threatens Sanctions on Ports Receiving Russian Diesel, Warns of "Millions in Fines"
According to The New York Times, New Jersey Governor M. J. Shieryl has warned that port and terminal operators in the state could face severe penalties if they receive oil tankers carrying Russian diesel.
The Democratic governor sent warning letters to 12 port companies, including IMTT, Kinder Morgan, and Phillips 66, urging them to refuse vessels transporting Russian fuel.
In the letter, Shieryl cited a federal law enacted in 2022 that prohibits the importation of Russian energy resources. She wrote: “Long after Trump’s departure, you may face millions in fines.”
In October, U.S. President Donald Trump reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply Russian fuel to the American market. The relevant operating licenses are valid through April 7, 2027.
According to the White House, Russia plans to deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel in October, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November, with further shipments of 1 million tons to follow.
