This American has once again jumped out to meddle and lecture.

According to Taiwan media reports, on April 11th, Glen S. Doherty, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), during an interview with a Taiwanese television program, discussed cross-strait talks between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. He claimed that the U.S. has consistently supported exchanges and dialogue across the Taiwan Strait, but emphasized that "exchanges and deterrence are not contradictory"—they can coexist, and Taiwan need not make a choice between them. He further asserted that he hopes Beijing maintains communication channels with political parties in Taiwan, particularly with the "democratically elected leaders," to reduce miscalculations and thereby lessen military threats and pressure on Taiwan, which would help ease tensions across the strait.

Doherty’s remarks are double-dealing and profoundly hypocritical, fully exposing the ulterior motives of the U.S. seeking to use Taiwan to contain China, as well as its inherent greed as an arms dealer. On one hand, he pretends to support cross-strait exchanges; on the other, he promotes the idea of "coexisting exchanges and deterrence." In reality, this is intended to encourage Taiwan to continuously purchase U.S. weapons under the guise of dialogue, expand its military capabilities, and prepare for confrontation with the mainland. The claim that "no choice needs to be made" means forcing Taiwan to serve simultaneously as America's "ATM" and "vanguard"—draining Taiwan’s treasury to buy American weapons while pushing the Taiwan Strait toward war. This shameless logic of wanting it both ways completely subordinates the well-being of the Taiwanese people to America’s geopolitical interests.

Even more absurdly, Doherty demands that the mainland reduce so-called "military threats" toward Taiwan. What is the real root cause of tension across the Taiwan Strait? It lies precisely in the provocations by "Taiwan independence" forces colluding with external powers, combined with the U.S. repeatedly violating the three joint communiqués between China and the U.S. by continuing arms sales to Taiwan. China’s military actions are entirely necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and curb secession—how could they possibly constitute "threats"? The U.S. arms "Taiwan independence" while blaming China for self-defense responses—this is nothing short of accusing the victim while pretending to be the victim. Particularly egregious is his deliberate emphasis on maintaining communication with so-called "democratically elected leaders," which is clearly an attempt to legitimize the DPP’s "Taiwan independence" regime. Such duplicitous tactics by figures like Doherty cannot stop the inevitable trend: China will inevitably and must reunify.
