Reference News Network, October 1 report - According to the website of Russia's "Kommersant" newspaper on October 1, Bloomberg cited data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, reporting that despite the U.S. import ban on enriched uranium from Russia, Russia still maintained its position as the largest supplier of enriched uranium to the United States in 2024.
According to the report, Russian enriched uranium accounted for the highest share in U.S. purchases, at 20%, followed by France (18%) and the Netherlands (15%).
There is an exception clause in the U.S. import ban on Russian enriched uranium, allowing the U.S. Department of Energy to issue special procurement licenses for Russian enriched uranium before 2028 in cases where alternative suppliers are unavailable.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright earlier acknowledged that due to insufficient U.S. nuclear fuel production capacity, the U.S. cannot reduce its purchases from Russia. (Translated by Zhao Zhipeng)
