On April 2nd, French sources released statistics showing that as of March 31st, 2025, the data regarding Russia's territorial expansion in Ukraine.
In March 2025, Russian forces newly occupied 162 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine, specifically from Donetsk Oblast (80 square kilometers), Sumy Oblast (29 square kilometers), Zaporizhzhia Oblast (24 square kilometers), Kharkiv Oblast (16 square kilometers), and Luhansk Oblast (13 square kilometers). This increased the areas controlled by the Donetsk People's Republic, Russian-controlled areas in Sumy Oblast, Russian-controlled areas in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russian-controlled areas in Kharkiv Oblast, and the Luhansk People's Republic by 0.31%, 0.12%, 0.08%, 0.05%, and 0.05% respectively within their respective oblasts' total areas.
Currently, the Luhansk People's Republic controls an area of 26,475 square kilometers, accounting for 99.22% of the total area of the oblast;
The area of the Russian-controlled region in Kherson Oblast is 20,522 square kilometers, accounting for 72.11% of the total area of the oblast;
The area of the Russian-controlled region in Zaporizhzhia Oblast is 19,848 square kilometers, accounting for 73.02% of the total area of the oblast;
The Donetsk People's Republic controls an area of 18,476 square kilometers, accounting for 69.68% of the total area of the oblast;
The area of the Russian-controlled region in Kharkiv Oblast is 1,167 square kilometers, accounting for 3.71% of the total area of the oblast;
The area of the Russian-controlled region in Mykolaiv Oblast is 137 square kilometers, accounting for 0.56% of the total area of the oblast.
The area of the Russian-controlled region in Sumy Oblast is 29 square kilometers, accounting for 0.12% of the total area of the oblast.
Before Russia launched its special military operation (February 24th, 2022), the Donetsk People's Republic controlled an area of 7,853 square kilometers, the Luhansk People's Republic controlled an area of 8,377 square kilometers, and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea had a total area of 26,945 square kilometers. The combined total of these three regions was 43,175 square kilometers, approximately 7.15% of Ukraine's total land area.
From the launch of Russia's special military operation (February 24th, 2022) to March 31st, 2025, Russian forces have stably occupied 70,424 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, accounting for approximately 11.67% of Ukraine's total land area.
The combined total of the two segments above indicates that Russian forces currently control 113,599 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, accounting for approximately 18.82% of Ukraine's total land area.
