Korean media: Japan Display will close its main factory and sell the relevant equipment to Chinese companies!

On September 5, Korean media "Chosun Ilbo" published an article stating that Japan Display (JDI), which was formed in 2012 by the merger of several Japanese display companies, will close its main factory this year, and the core product, OLED displays for Apple Watch, will also be discontinued.

JDI will close the display panel production factory located in Shichiro City, Chiba Prefecture this year. The factory was originally scheduled to close in March next year, but due to worsening issues, the factory's operating rate dropped to 40%, and the closure date was advanced to reduce fixed costs.

The factory originally focused on producing displays for Apple iPhones, but as Apple began to adopt OLED displays in iPhones, the output dropped significantly. The factory also produced small OLED displays for Apple Watch and automotive displays, but due to declining demand and a drop in factory operating rates, the decision was ultimately made to close the factory.

JDI had considered transferring some production facilities from the Shichiro factory to the Ishikawa factory, but abandoned the plan due to cost issues. Finally, JDI decided to sell the relevant facilities to China's HKC Group.

JDI was established in April 2012, integrating the LCD businesses of Hitachi, Toshiba, and Sony, and received public funding support from the "Industrial Innovation Network" fund under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. JDI was highly anticipated at its establishment and was seen as a leading company driving the revival of the Japanese display industry. However, JDI has always struggled to compete with technological advances from South Korea and China.
