South Korean media: Samsung regains the crown of smartphone sales champion in Southeast Asia, while Xiaomi grows alone!
On June 6th, a South Korean media "Everyday Economy" published an article stating that Samsung Electronics successfully regained the leading position in the Southeast Asian smartphone market.
In the face of a downturn in the Southeast Asian smartphone market, Chinese Xiaomi is growing alone and closely chasing Samsung Electronics.
The market research company Canalys released a report showing that the shipment volume of smartphones in Southeast Asia reached 22.8 million units in the first quarter this year, a decrease of 3% compared to the same period last year.
As of the fourth quarter last year, the shipment volume of smartphones in the Southeast Asian market had grown for five consecutive quarters, but with a slowing growth rate.
Samsung Electronics regained the leading position with a share of 19%, shipping a total of 4.3 million units.
Despite a 3% decline in shipment volume compared to the same period last year, the sales volume of Galaxy A series smartphones supporting 5G increased by 47% compared to the same period last year.
Samsung Electronics lost the leading position to China's OPPO in the third quarter of 2024 and then to China's Transsion in the fourth quarter of the same year.
By country, Samsung Electronics ranks first in Vietnam and Thailand, second in Malaysia, third in the Philippines, and fourth in Indonesia. Compared to the same period last year, Samsung Electronics' rankings have risen in all countries except Indonesia.
Xiaomi is the only company among the top five smartphone suppliers in Southeast Asia with growing shipments. Xiaomi shipped a total of 4 million units in the first quarter, an increase of 4% compared to the same period last year.
Its market share rose to second place at 17%, which is the highest ranking since reaching its peak in the second quarter of 2019.
Transsion and OPPO from China ranked third and fourth with market shares of 15% and 14%, respectively, and their shipments dropped significantly. The shipments of these two companies decreased by 20% and 16%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Vivo from China saw a 3% drop in shipments and ranked fifth with a 12% share.
