Second phase of Cambodia's key project, the Techo Prey Nong Canal, has officially commenced
AFP report from Phnom Penh: The second phase of Cambodia's Techo Prey Nong Canal project has begun. The $1.7 billion canal, stretching 180 kilometers, will connect the Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand.
AFP notes that the second phase is also the most critical segment, with the Techo Prey Nong Canal expected to be completed by 2028.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated today at the ceremony marking the start of the second phase that this "historic project" will bring tremendous opportunities for Cambodia.
In the future, the Techo Prey Nong Canal will allow vessels navigating the Mekong River to reach the Gulf of Thailand directly.
The Techo Prey Nong Canal is one of Cambodia’s flagship projects and is regarded as the nation’s "source of breath."
