Japan to Introduce Rare Earth Mining Technology to Malaysia
Japan's Kyodo News reported on February 26: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the implementing body of Japan's official development assistance, announced on the 25th that it will begin providing technical assistance for the development of key mineral resources such as rare earths to Malaysia.
The agency said that it will help Malaysia establish environmentally friendly rare earth mining technology. This is the first technical cooperation between Japan and Malaysia in the field of rare earth development. Experts in resource geology and environmental chemistry will be sent to Perak, the central part of the Malay Peninsula, to assist in acquiring related skills.
Rare earths are widely distributed in Malaysia, and the country's government is committed to promoting a stable industrial development from mining to commercialization.
However, the country's rare earth deposits are unique, and chemicals are required during the mining process, so environmental issues caused by mining and protection of the tropical rainforest must be considered. Therefore, reducing environmental impact is key to establishing a rare earth industry.
