Bureaucratic bloat, two Canadian government departments have seen a more than 300% increase in public servants over 10 years!
According to a new report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), since the Liberal Party came to power in 2016, the federal government has added 98,986 employees, an increase of 38%. During the same period, national population growth was less than 15%.
The fastest-growing departments include:
Infrastructure Canada: +375%
Women and Gender Equality Canada: +334%
External Review Committee of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: +229%
Elections Canada: +173%
Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB): +158%
But has service quality really improved? Especially for the Immigration and Refugee Board, although application numbers have surged (including a large number of international students), the efficiency of services is questionable.
CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano pointed out that the problem is not just the surge in numbers, but the staggering costs — according to the data from the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO), the average annual cost per federal public servant is $125,300 (including salaries, benefits, allowances, etc.) for taxpayers.
Although the number of public servants decreased by 9,807 last year (a reduction of 2.7%), Terrazzano said this is far from enough: "Prime Minister Carney promised to freeze the number of public servants, but it is far from sufficient to curb the excessive expansion during the Liberal era."
He called for a significant streamlining of the bloated bureaucracy and control of compensation and benefit costs.
