Korea Confirms Sale of Large Quantities of Tanks to Poland
The Korea Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced in a press release on Wednesday that South Korea has completed negotiations to sell K2 tanks to Poland.
The Korea Defense Acquisition Program Administration said that the Polish Minister of Defense "formally announced that the negotiations for the second K2 tank contract with Hyundai Rotem have been completed, and the agreement will be signed soon."
Yonhap News Agency quoted the Korea Defense Acquisition Program Administration as revealing that on the 2nd local time, the Polish defense minister concluded the second round of negotiations with Hyundai Rotem, the manufacturer of the K2 main battle tank, finalizing the second contract for the export of K2 main battle tanks to Poland.
Although the government did not disclose the exact value of the contract, Yonhap reported that it is estimated to involve 180 K2 tanks worth $6.5 billion.
According to Seok Jong-gun (音译石钟根), head of the Korea Defense Acquisition Program Administration, this agreement "again affirmed the strength and continuity of defense cooperation between South Korea and Poland."
AFP said that in 2022, South Korea signed a weapons deal worth $13.7 billion with Poland, the largest transaction in South Korea's history, which included providing K2 tanks and fighter jets to Poland. Poland is a neighbor and ally of Ukraine.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine created opportunities for South Korean industries to secure large contracts in Europe and the Middle East, and South Korea has become a major player in defense exports.
South Korea has particularly signed such contracts with Poland and Romania, including the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo rocket launchers.
