Han Media: China's Auto Sales Exceed Japan for the First Time in 2025

According to a report by Han Media's "Chosun Ilbo (Japanese Edition)" on March 23, in the ranking of new car sales by country last year, China surpassed Japan and became the first for the first time.

The media cited data from market research firm MarkLines. According to this, new car sales by Chinese manufacturers increased by about 10% year-on-year last year, reaching about 27 million units. On the other hand, sales by Japanese manufacturers slightly declined last year, reaching about 25 million units.

The report stated that this is the first time since 2000 that Japan's new car sales have been surpassed, dropping to the second place globally.

However, in the manufacturer rankings, Toyota Motor Corporation sold 11.32 million units, firmly securing an undisputed top position. Overall, the growth of Chinese manufacturers has been very significant.

New car sales of Chinese brands BYD and Geely Group both exceeded those of Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan. Sales of Honda and Nissan decreased compared to last year, while those of BYD and Geely Group increased. Even among the top 20 companies by sales, there are six Chinese companies and five Japanese companies.

The media said: "The recent slowdown in the Chinese market, whether the momentum of Chinese cars can continue, is crucial to overseas markets such as Europe and Southeast Asia."

Chinese manufacturers are improving cost competitiveness by setting up factories abroad and producing cars locally rather than exporting cars made in China.
