German media: CATL's "Naxtra" may shake the dominant position of lithium-ion batteries

CATL released the new sodium ion battery brand "Naxtra" on Monday and will begin mass production this year. In addition to the safer and lower-cost sodium ion technology, CATL also released the second-generation super-fast charging battery for electric vehicles, claiming that it can achieve a range of 520 kilometers after charging for 5 minutes.

The Chinese power battery giant CATL held a release event named "Boundary Awakening" in Shanghai on April 21st, launching the new sodium ion battery brand "Naxtra". The passenger vehicle power batteries under the "Naxtra" brand will enter the mass production phase in December this year. At the same time, CATL also released the second-generation super-fast charging battery for electric vehicles.

CATL became the first major power battery manufacturer to launch a sodium ion battery in 2021. Experts stated that, unlike other battery materials, sodium resources are abundant and inexpensive, and its electrochemical characteristics also have the potential to reduce the risk of fires in electric vehicles.

The first product under the "Naxtra" brand is a new type of sodium ion battery with an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, whose performance has already approached that of the widely used lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries currently applied in electric vehicles and grid energy storage systems.

Yong Ouyang, joint president of R&D at CATL, said that with the development of technology and supply chains, sodium ion batteries are expected to outperform lithium-ion batteries in terms of cost.

Zeng Yubin, founder of CATL, once stated that sodium ion batteries have the potential to replace up to half of the market share of the company's current dominant lithium iron phosphate batteries in the future.

In addition to the "Naxtra" brand, CATL also released the second-generation Shenheng super-fast charging battery. According to official claims, the battery can achieve a range of 520 kilometers after charging for 5 minutes and can charge from 0% to 80% in 15 minutes in cold weather.

Huang Gao, CTO of CATL, said at the press conference that more than 67 new electric vehicle models will be equipped with Shenheng batteries this year, but he did not specify which generation versions these models adopted.

According to Huang Gao, over 18.32 million vehicles equipped with CATL batteries are currently running in 66 countries around the world.

CATL also released the "Xiaoyao Dual-Core Battery", a new battery system architecture that adopts the "dual-core architecture" and "self-generating anode technology", similar to the "dual-engine architecture" design of civil airliners, aiming to enhance the safety of electric vehicles.
