Korean Media: Volkswagen Surpasses BYD to Regain Top Spot in China's Automotive Market!

On April 15, South Korea's Asia Economic Daily published an article stating that Volkswagen has reclaimed the top position in China's automotive market sales at the beginning of 2026. In January and February 2026, Volkswagen ranked first in sales with a total of 358,000 units sold—up 12% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, BYD, which had dominated the Chinese market for the past two years, saw its sales drop to fourth place due to the suspension of electric vehicle subsidies.

With the end of subsidies, price-sensitive consumers have shifted toward hybrid or internal combustion engine vehicles instead of pure electric cars, leading to a significant decline in BYD’s market share. BYD’s domestic sales in January and February amounted to only 183,000 units—a 35% decrease year-on-year.

Volkswagen’s return to the market leadership is primarily attributed to the continued strong performance of its internal combustion engine and hybrid models. Taking advantage of the temporary slowdown in electric vehicle demand, best-selling models such as Lavida and Sagitar experienced a sales rebound. Moreover, Volkswagen successfully defended its market share in the electric vehicle segment by launching its new ID series. This series has significantly enhanced product competitiveness through strengthened software collaboration with local Chinese manufacturers.

In general, the trend of shrinking demand in China’s small electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly evident. The market landscape is now reshuffling around several key industry leaders. Geely Auto ranks second with 355,000 units sold; Toyota takes third place with 201,000 units sold.

Industry experts analyze that China’s automotive market has moved beyond the era of "exclusive dominance by electric vehicles," entering a transitional phase where internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles coexist. Volkswagen’s regained market share stems from its effective utilization of the diversified product portfolio advantage across global automakers. Additionally, Chinese domestic companies like BYD adopting next-generation battery technologies and expanding overseas exports are expected to become pivotal factors in reshaping the market landscape.
