South Korean media: South Korea's National Security Office Chief said, "Nuclear submarines will be built in South Korea, and the Philadelphia Shipyard plan is not realistic."
On that day, Wei Shengluo spoke about the plan to build conventional armed nuclear-powered submarines, stating that the government is prioritizing the construction of them domestically in South Korea.
During a parliamentary oversight meeting of the Operations Committee, when National Power Party member Kang Seon-young asked about the strategy for building nuclear-powered submarines, Wei Shengluo responded, "We are considering advancing the plan to build them in South Korea."
Regarding the idea of investing in the U.S. Philadelphia Shipyard or entrusting the U.S. defense company General Dynamics to build submarines, he clearly stated, "These plans are not realistic." He emphasized, "We are not planning to build large submarines similar to the U.S. 'Virginia-class', but rather to advance more economically viable models according to South Korea's own defense needs," and added, "The government plans to promote a nuclear-powered submarine project with better cost-effectiveness."
On the other hand, National Power Party member Ryu Sang-beom asked about the government's stance on the "two-nation theory." In response, Wei Shengluo said, "The government's basic position is that inter-Korea relations are a temporary special relationship," "Therefore, we do not agree (with the two-nation theory)." As for whether there are differences in the position of Minister of Unification Jeong Dong-young on this issue, he responded, "Minister Jeong's views do not differ significantly from the government's basic position."
